R. Kelly set to postpone planned Dubai concerts
American singer R. Kelly’s hopes of performing in Dubai next month are looking less likely after a lawyer representing him asked a US court to hold off on a court filing requesting permission for the singer to travel to the emirate, according to media reports. The singer is currently facing ten counts of criminal sex abuse in Cook County – which includes Chicago – for allegedly abusing four women, of whom three were reportedly underage. He is banned from travelling outside state borders without permission, but last week ABC News reported he was set to seek court approval to fly by private jet to Dubai in order to play a series of shows between April 17 and 19. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune on Friday, Kelly’s attorney, Steven Greenberg, did not elaborate on why he had sought more time to file the court motion. A judge set a new court hearing for Kelly for May 7, meaning the singer was unlikely to be able to travel for his concerts in Dubai next month. However, Greenberg was optimistic Kelly would appear in the emirates at some point in the near future. “I think the judge would be in a better position to rule in our favour if we had a little more detail in the motion… There’s still a chance he could go to Dubai, sure,†he was quoted as saying. Greenberg added that Kelly was facing financial difficulties due to his mounting legal bills and desperately needed to earn money. Despite the negative publicity, the lawyer claimed that he had received more than 150 emails in the last six months from around the world, requesting Kelly “to perform in just every place possible you can think ofâ€.
