Commerce and Empire in India: the Centrality of the Hindu Temple
The Hindu temple has captivated tourists, archaeologists and art historians for a century. How it came to provide a centerpiece for Indian political economy in the first millennium only attracted academic attention after the 1961 Census, when Indian temples were counted. Historians began to ponder the massive scale of temple construction, patronage and royal rituals. The political centrality of the temple is clear, yet its economic importance is less obvious. This lecture will consider the temple as the home of Brahman commercialism, a precursor of traditional Indian capitalism.
