Sharjah International Book Fair In World’s Top Five
The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) has been named among the world’s top five book exhibitions for 2013, according to a feature recently printed in UK-based reputed industry specialist publication The Bookseller.
On clinching the top slot on the most coveted and authentic international book exhibitions’ rating, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, SIBF Director, said, "It is a moment of pride for the entire team of the Sharjah International Book Fair, as well as the nation, to see SIBF’s name side by side with other international Book Fairs. Every year, an incredible amount of hard work and meticulous planning by all those involved goes into making each exhibition a tremendous success, and the past 31 years have only helped us drive the event to perfection. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, whose leadership, guidance and wise directives have enabled us to reach this pinnacle of success."
Ahmed said further, "What sets the SIBF apart is the leadership’s clear vision, the passion to succeed, and the tireless efforts of the entire team, from the executive committee right through to the most to junior member, all of which has contributed to SIBF taking its place as one of the most respected book fairs in the world. Over the years, SIBF has been able to achieve major milestones by focusing on the promotion of Arab literature and providing a platform for novice authors, writers and publishers to establish themselves in the international publishing arena, and today people from across the world attend the event."
The Sharjah International Book Fair’s made it to the top, along with other book fairs. Cultural extravaganza and book exhibition organised in Sharjah - works with commitment towards its celebrated motto ’For the love of the written word’.
This year, the exhibition attracted more than 600,000 fairgoers, 924 publishers and showcases books from around 62 nations. The exhibition aims at inculcating a love of books among people, by providing great variety of books of well-priced books in order to capture the interest of a range of readers, from the most vociferous to the very laidback.
The fair goes beyond a typical book exhibition to give an insider’s glimpse at authentic Arab culture. The programme is divided into three strands; professional, cultural and children’s - with a plethora of activities, workshops and discussions going on at the sidelines to highlight the numerous issues faced by Western as well as Arab publishers.
Founded in 1858, The Bookseller is a British magazine that is read by approximately 50,000 people each week, in over 90 countries.
The magazine contains the latest news from the publishing and bookselling worlds, in-depth analysis of current industry trends and features.
The SIBF was established in 1982 under an Emiri decree issued by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and has expanded to become one of the biggest book fairs in the Middle East.
The 10-day annual Book Fair is a direct result of Sharjah’s dedication and commitment to developing and maintaining a culture of reading within the Emirate and the UAE, as is clearly encapsulated in the SIBF motto - For the love of the written word.
