Carpet Oasis to display 170,000 handmade carpets including some of the world’s rarest and most valuable collections
Carpet Oasis, the long-running carpet exhibition of Dubai Shopping Festival, will showcase over 170,000 handmade carpets in an area of 7,000 sq m including an exclusive range of carpets from countries that have thriving carpet weaving industries including Iran, Afghanistan, India, Kashmir, Pakistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and China.
The exhibition of carpets, which started from the launch of DSF in 1996, has been a star attraction this DSF with people with a penchant for art, culture and carpets making their way to the Dubai World Trade Centre, to get a first-hand insight into the carpet industry.
Organized by Dubai Customs in conjunction with DSF from 27 December 2012 to 14 January 2013, Carpet Oasis has on display some of the world’s rarest and most valuable collections of carpets from 50 industry leaders, giving visitors an opportunity to get a better understanding of the historical and cultural value of carpets.
Carpet Oasis plays an important role in driving trade and tourism traffic to Dubai. The popularity of this exhibition is reflected in the fact that carpet sales over the past 16 years amounted to about Dhs1.4bn. During this period more than 950,000 people visited the exhibition.
Carpet Oasis achieved Dhs77m in sales in 2011, a 15% increase over 2010, and given the fact that this year’s Carpet Oasis is the biggest ever since its inception, the organizers expect to surpass 2011 sales figures.
