Mohammed bin Rashid renames Emirates Road after Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed
Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has ordered that the Emirates Road be named the ’’Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road’’ in a tribute to His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for his valuable role in advancing inclusive development nationwide.
The Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road is one of the strategic routes in the UAE’s land transport and road network as it serves as an effective pivotal link facilitating smooth flow of vehicular traffic and goods between Dubai and other neighbouring emirates.
Inaugurated in 2001, the 140 km long major artery, 73 km of which in Dubai, is projected to play an increasing tremendous role under the rapid pace of national development and massive urban expansion on both sides given the steady increase of road users heading to Abu Dhabi from Dubai and other emirates and vice versa.
The Road begins in the truck road in Abu Dhabi and passes through Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Qaiwain to end in Ras Al Khaimah. To accommodate the mounting traffic movement, the Road and Transport Authority of Dubai Government, upgraded in 2006 the road capacity in double to six lanes to carry 12,000 vehicle per hour.
