Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) 2013 Brings "Love Letters" To Theatre Lovers In Dubai
An acclaimed, Pulitzer-nominated play will feature as part of the superb array of entertainment lined up during the Dubai Shopping Festival 2013, as visitors and residents savour the best cultural and family activities that the city offers in presenting “Dubai at its Best”.
The English play, “Love Letters” is being presented by Jamie Wilson Productions and Arts For All, in association with the Dubai Shopping Festival, and will be staged from January 31 to February 2, at the Madinat Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah, with a show each day at 8pm.
Written by A.R. Gurney, “Love Letters” maps a 50-year relationship between impulsive, rebellious Melissa Gardner and dependable, staid Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. From the first exchange of thank you notes and RSVPs, a lifetime of letter writing ensues. Creating a canvass where the protagonists often find it easier to express their true feelings on paper than in person, “Love Letters” is a witty and often candid glimpse into an unconventional romance.
“Love Letters” has played to great acclaim both on Broadway in New York and at London’s West End, and comes to Dubai for three shows. It has the distinction of being nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, the United States’ highest award for literature and the arts. Stylishly simple and elegant, this testament to the lost art of Love Letter writing is a touching reminder to not let “the one” be the one that got away.
Directed by the award-winning British director Ian Talbot, who has been honoured by an OBE for his contribution to theatre, and starring Stefanie Powers, the American television and film actress best known for her performances in productions such as Hart to Hart and Starsky, the play has received rave reviews from several critics and top newspapers around the world. The UK’s Daily Mail called it a “stylish romance”, while in the US, The Wall Street Journal termed it, “Exhilarating, funny and moving”, and the New York Daily News wrote: “Gurney’s virtues...civility, elegance, wit and charm...have seldom been better displayed than they are in Love Letters.”
Tickets for the Dubai production are priced at AED 200 to 300. For those who miss the shows in Dubai, there will be another chance to catch the play on February 5, when it will have a single show at Abu Dhabi’s Armed Forces Officers Club.
