DEWA records significant increase in electricity and water production
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority ( DEWA ) recorded a 10.6% increase in installed power capacity during 2012, rising to 9,646 megawatts (MW) compared to 8,721 MW in 2011. Desalinated water production capacity recorded a growth of 17.5% in 2012 to 470 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) compared to 400 MIGD in 2011.
"The remarkable development and enhancement of DEWA ’s electricity and water infrastructure in 2012 supports the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide efficient and reliable services to meet the city’s fast-paced economic, social, and construction development," said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA .
" DEWA ’s 132kV main substations increased to 184 in 2012 compared to 165 substations in 2011, recording an increase of 11.5%. The number of 400 KV substations reached 18 last year compared to 17 in 2011. Comparing 132kV electricity transmission networks, the length of cables laid grew to 1,932km in 2012 compared to 1,687km in 2011, an increase of 14.5%," added Al Tayer.
"The total length of water transmission networks in the 550-1200 mm-diameter range grew to 2,059km in 2012 compared to 1,981km in 2011, an increase of 4%. The water distribution networks totalled 8,521km in 2012 compared to 8,288km in 2011, achieving a growth of 3%."
" DEWA ’s expansion plans for production capacity, transmission and distribution networks rely on future demand for electricity and water for various developmental projects in the city," concluded Al Tayer.
