Davydenko Upsets Tipsarevic At Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
Nikolay Davydenko claimed an upset victory over Janko Tipsarevic at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Tuesday, beating the number six seed 6-0 7-5.
The opening game took a remarkable 13 minutes as Davydenko fought off seven break points, and at 17 minutes the second game took even longer with Davydenko breaking to lead 2-0 on his own seventh break point.
The Russian, who reached the final in Doha in January, went on to take the first set in 50 minutes before Tipsarevic staged a brief fightback.
The Serbian broke serve twice to lead 4-1, but Davydenko recovered one break to trail 2-4 and then broke Tipsarevic again as he served for the set at 5-4. A further break at 6-5 gave him the match.
"We play long, you know, deuce and advantage, deuce, so many times," said Davydenko of the first two games. "I was really tired. In two games I was thinking match just starting and I’m already tired.
"In the second set he like go to toilet and come back and start to play better. I don’t know what he did there. Maybe after a little bit I start to change something. Maybe, you know, he lose concentration.
"It was 50/50 second set. I was waiting for him (to make) some mistake because it’s really difficult to do some winners here."
Davydenko will now face Victor Hanescu after his opponent, Bernard Tomic, was forced to retire due to illness. Hanescu broke serve in the opening game and Tomic quit with Hanescu leading 3-2.
