Dubai Sculpture Symposium 2013 Is Taking Shape
Dubai witnesses the biggest collective sculptural art workshop in the UAE
The area behind the Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai is currently being used to stage the biggest collective sculpture workshop in the UAE. With 15 artists representing 13 Arabic countries participating and creating works of art between, the workshop form part of the first ever Sculpture Dubai symposium, taking place from the 18th of February till the 10th of the coming March 2013, and will run the entire duration of the symposium.
The artists have been given free reign to explore their creativity in the medium of marble and a number of artists, intellectuals, journalists, and university students, in addition to a large number of specialists and members of the public interested in sculpture, have already visited the workshop and witnessed the various artists’ sculptures taking shape.
Speaking about Sculpture Dubai 2013 HE Sultan Saqr Al Suwaidi, President of Dubai’s Cultural and Scientific Association, said: “Considering the extensive artistic visualisation characterising the participating, Sculpture Dubai 2013 represents a major achievement in Dubai’s constantly expanding cultural calendar. The gathering of so many talented Arab artists in one place aims to further elevate the value of Arabic art in Dubai and the UAE. We are proud to be able to provide the support that these artists really deserve, and are also certain that this support will be reflected the admirable and praise worthy artistic works that are currently taking shape.”
He added: “We are extremely happy in following with pride the daily artistic touches, and the admirable artistic works being created by the Arab artists in marble. There is no doubt that the workshop has taken on a distinctly competitive flavour, with each artist striving to doing his or her best in representing the highest level of their experience and talents. We are confident that what will be achieved during the coming days will be a remarkable achievement in the annals of Arabic sculpture.”
On Sunday March 3, the Cultural and Scientific Association will host a special session to highlight the works created during Dubai Sculpture 2013.
Further, the significance of the artistic works performed by the artists in the workshop at the cultural and scientific association took different angles; the Tunisian artist Muhrez Alouz has chosen to personify the concept of maternity in his work, the Libyan artist Mohamed Ben Al Amin is executing the idea of embracing his relationships to start embracing the Arab future, while the Sudanese artist Khaled Abdullah Murghani’s concept is reflects his Sudanese heritage through a synergy of clouds and Arabic letters.
Emirati artist Abdulrahim Salem commented on his emerging work, saying: “There is no doubt that women have a large presence in all aspects of life. My work is entitled ‘Me and Her’, and aims to embody women through work; by giving a heritage description to this distinguished figure of our society and by adding well known Emirati touches in the general outlook in order to make my concept clearer.”
Palestinian artist, Ahmad Knaan, revealed that he is creating a sculpture that will include homes featuring Palestinian contemporary design and Bahraini artist Ali Al Muhaimid’s work includes a group of birds and explores the idea of balance. Omani artist Ayoub Al Baloushi’ concept revolves around an artistic work taking the form of a bird representing a starting point, while Lebanese artist Antoine Basbous and the Syrian Suhail Budour have abstained from talking about their concepts till completion of their artistic works.
It is worth noting, that 15 artists from 13 Arabic countries are participating in Dubai Sculpture2013, which is being hosted by the Cultural and Scientific Association and sponsored by Dubai Culture and Art Authority, Marsam Mattar, and Gulf Sugar; the list of the participating countries include Bahrain, KSA, Sudan, Tunisia, Syria, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Kuwait, and the UAE.
