Chefs bag coveted awards after fierce competition with leading industry peers
Dubai World Trade Centre’s (DWTC) award-winning hospitality team won 50 medals at the recently concluded prestigious Emirates International Salon Culinaire 2013, including 4 Gold, 13 Silver, 33 Bronze and 22 Merit Awards. Held alongside Gulfood 2013, the culinary competition saw 72 of DWTC’s chefs compete against over 1,500 cuisine and pastry chefs, cooks and bakers, testing their abilities across a range of categories that included live cooking sessions, static displays of culinary art, finesse and skill.
Organised by the Emirates Culinary Guild, the region’s largest association of professional chefs, Salon Culinaire consists of a series of competitions, bringing together professional chefs, pastry chefs, cooks and bakers in 23 classes. Participants are not only judged on their gastronomic and artistic acumen but are also evaluated on timing, efficiency and collaboration. In the lead-up to the competition, DWTC’s chefs go through an intensive six months training programme after which the best are selected to participate in the competition. Chefs with varying levels of experience are encouraged to hone their skills through practice, dedicating long hours to create show stopping dishes that highlight DWTC’s culinary talents.
“Salon Culinaire is an excellent opportunity for chefs to display their skills and helps them gain recognition for their work on an international platform,” said Mohammed Al Jumairi, Vice President– Hospitality, Dubai World Trade Centre. “It also helps to develop talent within the culinary industry of Dubai, encouraging world-class dining outlets and chefs to come to the emirate. Winning these awards at Salon Culinaire demonstrates the quality that DWTC provides throughout the year while catering for top exhibitions, conferences and other events. I would like to congratulate our chefs and dedicate the success to their unwavering passion and dedication throughout the training process and the competition.”
Among the gold medal winners, Chef Mario Fernandes was awarded for his five course menu, Chef Yang Ge won in the Open show piece category, Chef Shyju Varghese won in the Tapas, Finger foods and Canapés category and DWTC’s artist Chef Jayson won in the Practical Vegetables Carving category.
DWTC’s hospitality team consists of 135 chefs from 17 countries and 5 continents, enabling them to deliver a variety of cuisines, including Thai, Chinese, Indian, French, German, and Emirati amongst others, for as many as 15,000 guests per day. Their versatile and comprehensive catering capability covers events across the board including everything from mega trade events to international congresses and live events, corporate meetings, state functions, weddings, sporting events, banquets, and gala dinners. DWTC also delivers tailor-made à la carte menus and buffets to palaces, clubs, associations and private venues across the UAE.
