Dubai Culture Unveils Largest Roster Of Community-Driven Activities And Initiatives At SIKKA 2013
The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage, has unveiled its largest roster of community-driven and art-centred activities and initiatives as part of SIKKA 2013, the contemporary artist-led fair, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture.
With a culturally and artistically rich repertoire of events, SIKKA will be held from March 14 to 24, 2013, at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the nerve-centre of the city.
Over the course of the 11 day fair, visitors can participate in a plethora of activities ranging from workshops, talks and discussions, guided tours and walks, film and animation screenings and children’s programmes. The bouquet of activities feature a diverse spread of mediums, including animation workshops, Haiku walks, art auctions, Polaroid photography and Arabic calligraphy, and cover a range of subjects from visual arts, animation, design, new media, literature and poetry, music and performing arts and culture offering artists, art enthusiasts, children, and visitors insights into the creative flourish of culture and arts in Dubai.
On Friday, March 15, SIKKA will host an array of workshops including lattice making with Mobius Design Studio, character design, introduction to classical Arabic music, light animation, interactive and engaging walks with poet and writer Frank Dullaghan, who will host a Haiku walk for poetry aficionados, while tasmena will give visitors an educational tour of Al Khor. Film screenings include internationally acclaimed animated films and shorts. Children’s activities include a workshop in character design and mask making for children between the ages of 11 to 15, and a poetry writing workshop for children aged 8 to 12.
On Saturday, March 16, quint magazine will hold a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges of being a designer in the UAE, while The State will host a panel discussion on the concept of Dubai, cultural production in the city and changing narratives. Waraq, The Animation Chamber, and Mobius Design Studio will lead specialised workshops, while a ‘Design Duel,’ hosted by quint, will allow participants to prove their mettle in a live design battle. Visitors can also enjoy Arabic poetry readings in the courtyard. On Sunday, March 17, visitors can revel in a workshop on comic book making or join a panel discussion on the changing perception of local contemporary artist, Mohammed Kazem, and its archival press coverage to date hosted by Brusselsprout, a talk session about the progression of the Al Khor area, its heritage and shared stories across generations by tasmena, sculpting with Polymer Clay, and a discussion with author Julia Johnson on her book, The Pearl Diver, followed by an Abra tour and a trip to the Pearl Museum.
On Monday, March 18, visitors can take part in a class on book binding. The next day, participants will gain insights into the world of typography, digital arts and media, as well as an insider’s view into stop-motion animation. On Wednesday, March 20, SIKKA will highlight the construction of Kufic script, emerging works and animations from the region, in addition to the screening of the documentary ‘Helvetica,’ which investigates the impact of the iconic font.
On Thursday, March 21, visitors can create stories with The Book Shelter and the Middle Eastern Hakawati; and on March 22, visitors can join the multimedia animation workshop, tasmena’s walk around the Khor, a panel discussion on the power of words, a hands-on experimental workshop on the behaviour of sand in making sculptures, in addition to participating in children’s arts workshops and a session on the deejaying and vinyl culture.
On Saturday, March 23, SIKKA will showcase a collective reading performance by over a dozen poets from The Poeticians; spread knowledge on using material condition in design; host a session of board games and quizzes; introduce activities around the meanings of words with the Aleph Collective and The Book Shelter; a social feast on the rooftop of House 53 by Mobius Design Studio; and workshops on introduction to Arabic ornamentation and children’s calligraphy workshop. On the last day of SIKKA, bloggers, social media enthusiasts, media, and artists can mingle at The Culturist’s Blog Party.
