Victoria International School Of Sharjah Hosts Model United Nations Conference
Students from six international schools from Sharjah and Dubai have participated in the first Victoria International School of Sharjah (VISS) Model United Nations conference. Participating schools included Dubai College, Dubai International Academy, Australian International School, Universal American School, Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) Arabian Ranches, along with host VISS.
The format of the conference enabled two students to represent one of over 20 countries including USA, Canada, Brazil, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, South Africa, Norway, Syria, Iran, Turkey, Lebanon, China, South Korea, India, Australia, Japan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Focused on conflict resolution, in particular the ongoing crisis in Syria, students researched and studied their assigned countries and their current political positions on the global stage.
The two-day conference, organised entirely by the VISS senior school students themselves, was opened with a thoughtful speech by Dr. Roderick Crouch, Principal of VISS. He spoke about conflict resolution and how a nations’ behaviour resembles that of individuals in their daily lives, and he highlighted the role of education in providing both the knowledge and wisdom needed to make good decisions.
All students embraced their ambassadorial roles with enthusiasm and are now looking forward to repeating it again next year.
Speaking about the first VISS MUN conference, Dr Roderick said:
“MUN involves researching, public speaking, debating and writing and it represents a great opportunity for students to learn critical thinking and teamwork, as well as leadership skills. This conference is the perfect project to prepare our students for the future. After all, Today’s Students will be Tomorrow’s Leaders.
“The VISS MUN experience is the perfect metaphor of the IB learner profile,†said Abhinav Ramesh, VISS student and the delegate for USA.
“My two unforgettable days at VISS MUN have taught me a great deal about cooperation and the importance of dialogue between both people and nations,†added Wahid Ghaffari, from Dubai College.
