Bee'ah Brings The Middle East's First Solar-Powered Water Surface Cleaning Boats To Sharjah
Tandeef – the waste collection, street cleaning and city beautification division of Bee’ah – has introduced innovative and cost-effective lagoon cleaning boats to its existing fleet of electric-powered vehicles. The boats’ Sharjah debut further cements the emirate’s journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
The new fleet includes pioneering ‘zero emission’ mobile equipment such as waste compacters, urban vacuum cleaners, automated sweepers and street vacuums. The region’s first solar-powered water cleaning boats can collect up to two hundred kilograms a day of waste from Sharjah’s lagoons and floating debris.
“Tandeef’s fleet of electric-powered vehicles has proven to be highly cost effective and easy-to-maintain,†said Khaled Al Huraimel, Bee’ah’s Group CEO. “At Tandeef, we strive to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions stemming from our company’s equipment and vehicles. These new boats further accelerate our journey towards achieving zero-waste to landfill in the Emirate of Sharjah by 2015 – a goal established in accordance with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah to ensure an environmentally-sustainable future.â€
He also added, “The boats are currently floating along the Corniche of Sharjah’s Al Khaled Lagoon – and are being closely monitored by Tandeef’s team.â€
Tandeef – the leading waste collection and street cleaning division – collects residential, commercial and industrial waste from the city of Sharjah. The division inaugurated the country’s first residential recycling program in 2012 with the introduction of 2,000 pairs of blue and green colored 2.4 CBM bins – blue for recyclables and green for general waste, to replace the single-stream municipal bins. In addition, new collection and cleaning equipment was acquired – in order to further guarantee an efficient and environmentally sound service.
Once collected, waste is taken to the Waste Management Centre in Al Saj’ah where it is sorted and sent to the different state-of-the-art facilities managed and operated by Bee’ah. The Centre consists of various facilities to treat municipal solid waste (MSW), discarded tires, construction and demolition waste, electronic waste, waste water and sludge. The Centre also features a slew of other departments centering on landfill reengineering, education and outreach as well as policy development.
Tandeef is dedicated to providing solutions for Sharjah’s waste management issues and is primarily responsible for the beautification of the city of Sharjah and its waste collection and management processes. The division remains committed to reducing the actual volume of waste through community outreach activities. In fact, Tandeef believes waste production can be dramatically minimized if residents converse resources using the four environmental Rs —reducing, re-using, recycling and recovering.
Since its founding, Bee’ah has set out to catapult the emirate of Sharjah into the Environmental Capital of the Middle East and make it the first Arab city ever to divert 100% of its waste from landfill.
In the past five years, Bee’ah’s objectives have focused on resource recovery, allowing it to achieve a remarkably high landfill diversion rate.
