Sharjahs First Airport Represented In Special Display At Sahara Mall
Visitors flocked to “Museum Collections Make Connections,†a special exhibition held at Sahara Mall 19-21 May organized by Sharjah Museums Department on the occasion of International Museum Day 2014. The temporary exhibition will be accompanied by a number of family workshops on all 3 days and aims to increase community awareness of and appreciation for SMD’s 16 museums.
"Museum Collections Make Connections,†invites the visitors to discover interesting facts about the world of travel through the selected museum objects on display, each of which also tells a story that makes a connection to our everyday lives.
The exhibition showcased a number of remarkable displays including the Hanno plane, designed circa 1929-1930. This was the very first air carrier to land in Sharjah’s airport on October 5, 1932, transporting passengers, cargo and much-needed spare parts. You can visit Al Mahatta Museum to learn more about the history of the first airport in the UAE.
SMD curatorial staff members were on hand to speak with visitors and to introduce them to the 16 SMD museums spanning disciplines including science, heritage, and art. The special exhibition received enthusiastic public praise from individuals, students, and families alike who expressed the modern day relevance of taking artefacts beyond the museums’ halls to make them accessible to an even wider audience.
Within the same context, SMD launched a special project on the occasion of International Museum Day, "Heartifact". Visitors are invited to take pictures of a personal object that has a special meaning in their lives and circulate them via Instagram. Sharjah Museums will collect all the posts and create a collage of all your heartifacts! For more information follow us on Instagram and join the campaign.
From Sahara Mall, the exhibition will travel to Arabian Centre, where it will be on show 22-24 May 2014.
