Dubai Retailer Says Enough Ramadan Stocks
An official of Dubai hypermarket chain Emirates Cooperative Society (ECS) said there would be enough supply to meet increased Ramadan shopping demand.
Some shops run out of promotion items before the end of their promotion period, said Walid Al Maghrabi, food purchase manager and deputy commercial manager, ECS.
His comments came during a press conference on Thursday to announce the ECS Ramadan promotion, which starts on Friday.
He said because of special Ramadan offers, some retailers underestimate the increase in demand and run out of stock of items on promotion. Al Maghrabi added all the six ECS branches have enough stock to meet demand.
The chain’s total Ramadan discounts, averaging about 35-50 per cent on some 1,000 products, are valued at around Dh10 million, he said.
Al Maghrabi also reassured customers there would be no unauthorised price hikes following Ramadan-led increased demand for shopping. During Ramadan, many residents stock up on Ramadan bundle deals or “baskets†consisting of popular and staple food items, compared to buying them separately in lower quantities during regular months.
“We never increase prices without approval [from the Ministry of Economy’s Consumer Protection Department],†Al Maghrabi added.
On Monday, department director Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi had said retailers would be blocked from unauthorised price hikes. Dr Nuaimi, who was present at Thursday’s press conference. He also appreciated ECS for launching the Ramadan campaign.
ECS’s first campaign begins on Friday till the end of Ramadan and the second one starts on the 10th of Ramadan till Eid Al Fitr.
